Dry eye disease
Dry Eye Syndrome or Keratoconjunctivitis sicca is the condition where there is a
chronic lack of moisture on the surface of the eye and is one of the most common eye conditions
worldwide with up to 20% of the population suffering from this issue.
Two types of dry eye
1. Lipid deficient
2. Aqueous deficient
Dry Eye is caused by either an inadequate amount of tears or poor quality of tears.
Dysfunction to any of the three components of the tear film (lipid, aqueous, mucin) will
cause dry eye symptoms.
Dry eye symptoms and causes
Symptoms include burning, itching, watering, aching, fatigue, soreness/pain, foreign body
sensation, grittiness, red eyes, pressure, and photophobia.
Factors attributing to dry eye include computer use, extended contact lens wear, age, outdoor/indoor environment, frequent flying, smoking, health conditions, medications, and eyelid issues.
